Hello, learned Obsidian Portal visitors!

After a search I just discovered Chainsawxiv's "Sanction of Athar tips and tricks section":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/sanction/wikis/tips-tricks#2 and that provided huge help on some formatting for the adventure log pages I put in place. Thanks to Chainsawxiv for that great resource!

But I have another question about writing to the adventure log that I haven't seen anything about (maybe it's not an issue for most) so was wondering if anyone had any thoughts.

First, some background. I am not the GM for our group, and I did not set up our Obsidian Portal site. I am one of the players in our group (I play the wizard Rahab), however, and I write the adventure log as a kind of novelization of our game play. I compose in Microsoft Word before I copy/paste to the adventure log pages that I create. Once the text is there, I format with HTML, save, ta-da, the pages appear. Cool.

Except I like footnotes, and I write some pretty extensive ones, sometimes. In Microsoft Word, this is easy: Format Menu to Insert to Footnote. When I copy-paste to the adventure log creation boxes, however, the MS Word-specific footnote formatting doesn't translate. I have to hunt for the specific places I inserted footnotes, create superscript codes in HTML at those spots, and then scroll all the way to the bottom of the entry, set off a separate footnote space with a typed line, and then re-type each specific footnote, including the number and the text. Does anyone know if there is a faster way to create footnotes, or even an HTML-specific footnote coding format?

If my question is unclear, please let me know and I will try and re-phrase or add more detail.

Regardless, thanks for any help, and if anyone is interested in reading our game's story, we are located right over "here":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/geeks-distributed. It is a Rise of the Runelords Pathfinder campaign, and while our site is not the most advanced you'll see, I do hope you enjoy the story writing!

So I'm using the AD&D dynamic character sheet by Kenurion for my latest campaign, but I'm having an issue with the colors not showing up right. Every alternate column shows up as an unreadable white.

Like this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v478/liger_bomb/charsheet_zpsece6e65c.png

I think my custom CSS is interfering somehow? The issue seems to be tied in to the overall text color. If I change the text color to black then I can read the alternate columns in the character sheet just fine. Unfortunately, the background color on the rest of the campaign pages is also black, thus nothing is readable on any non-character sheet pages. Is there some sort of exception I can throw in to fix this, or am I stuck not using the character sheet at all?

Hi folks,

Long-time lurker, I *think* I have posted elsewhere in the forums prior to today, can't recall.

On to the real issue.

I am trying to reverse-engineer the hover effect shown on the dark queen of the west campaign (links at the bottom). I have been working with Gaaran, who has been great and sent me a copy of the HTML for the page and a link to the actual CSS being used (Firebug CSS content was rather huge and seemed more than the Pre-OP processed version). With the exact HTML and the exact CSS, one would think you would get the same results, but such is not the case. What I get instead seems to have the basic elements, but layout is all wrong and the hover element is completely missing, defeating the main objective (to reverse engineer how it was achieved).

Anyone have any idea as to why the exact same HTML and the exact same CSS produces different results? While my real goal is to get a disconnected hover result (unlike RobertKety's use in his awesome Dragonlance wiki), I am now also quite perplexed as to how identical inputs result in different outputs. I tried both Textile parsers, just in case, but no change (I don't believe any actual Textile code is used, actually). Looking through the settings, the only other change I could see being made is typekits, but that is all about custom font stuff so I have doubts that it would produce such a difference. So why might the layout, driven by the CSS, be different when my CSS comes directly from the CSS file of the other campaign?
So I decided to hide it. The following code minimizes the header into a small square with the Obsidian Portal logo. When you hover the mouse over the logo, it expands. For the coding example, I expanded the width so the minimized header would shift to the left of the content frame. The code is also designed for a campaign with no other CSS formatting so you'll need need to customize it. Feel free to take a look at how I tailored the code on my page. Happy coding!
I uploaded it to the site (simple image uploaded) and it's been there for some time. For some reason today, all of the sudden, it disappeared. A quick investigation shows that it is still there - but that its asset number has changed. This is extrmely frustrating, I've been using it for a long time, and recently have not uploaded any images (which, I imagine, could possibly cause a change in database records, hence changing it's asset number).
What options do I have? Go through literally thousands of pages and change the graphic? Go through literally thousands of pages and delete the graphic? Leave the wierd title on each page? Is there a way to edit asset numbers to replace it with the old one?

Hey there! So I'm currently trying to migrate from some inline CSS to create scrolls around some of my pages into a few classes that I can then use to mark up the page. While the scroll work CSS seems to work fine, it breaks the font I have defined in the class on Chrome/PC. On IE/PC, Firefox/PC, Chrome/Mac, Safari/Mac it looks great. I would just mark it up to weird browser incompatibility but the font I picked makes some pretty lavish capital letters. As such, I had to make some places where grammatically, a capital would be appropriate, using a lowercase to make it look right. If you strip the font away, it makes the page look like it's written by a three year old.

While I could stick with the in-line [div]/CSS, I fear I'm gonna run into problems in the future when I choose to change something.

Here is the code in question:

In my CSS Page:

/*SCROLL WORK BACKGROUND*/

.scrolltop {width:730px;font-family:IM Fell English;font-size:14pt;line-height:normal;background-image:url('http://cdn.obsidianportal.com/assets/221772/bg_large.jpg');}
.scrollmid {width:730px;font-family:IM Fell English;height:39px;background-image:url('http://cdn.obsidianportal.com/assets/221774/top_large.png');}
.scrollbody {width:650px;font-family:IM Fell English;padding:20px 40px 20px 40px;}
.scrollbottom {width:730px;font-family:IM Fell English;height:39px;background-image:url('http://cdn.obsidianportal.com/assets/221773/bottom_large.png');}

On a page using the classes (With Angle Brackets Switched to Square Brackets so that you can see the code):

[div class="scrolltop"]
[div class="scrollmid"][/div]
[div class="scrollbody"]

Content of the Page

[/div]
[div class="scrollbottom"][/div]
[/div]

h2. Background

So I am thinking about creating a brand new campaign world using Obsidian Portal. I have been happy with my current "Valdorian Age":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/valdorian-age-rising-power-on-the-frontier . But I realized that I 'boxed' myself into a corner as a GM with the campaign world. I could go to the trouble of recreating the campaign (a lot of trouble considering the fact I can't just back up and restore the site onto a new site) or just create a new campaign world from scratch.

h2. The questions

What would people recommend as best practices when it comes to using Obsidian Portal. I have been looking at the various threads on the Help & Tips forum. These threads are great for the how to implement things but I am asking for the design approach people are taking or wish they took when they got going. So imagine if you could start from scratch how would you do it again.

h3. Features

So would you use Adventure Log, Wiki, Characters, Items, Forums, Calendar, Maps, and/or Comments? I have seen that some GMs are skipping Characters, Items, and Maps and putting that information in the Wiki. Do you have an opinion about that.

h3. Layout

Is there a consensus on who has the best layout these days?

I have taken a look at "Sanction of the Athar Tips & Tricks":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/sanction/wikis/tips-tricks , "Age of Legends Miscellany":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/age-of-legends/wikis/miscellany , "A God ...
Greetings all,

I'm starting this thread with the intent of having it act as sort of a repository for useful, handy or interesting snippets of CSS code. I've seen more than a few code bits in this forum post or that, and I assume that I can't be the only one who wishes they were all in one place. With that said, I release this into the wilds of OP, and hope that it grows and thrives.

Hi all

Relatively new to the site... well... I'm not, but have only just started to use it properly. Basically i added a bunch of tags incorrectly and now want to remove them. Now i edited the posted, deleted them from the list at the bottom, and re entered them correctly, but its the old incorrect tags which are still listed at the side. I was wondering if there was anyway of getting inside your wiki and deleting tags entirely...

Thanks in advance for any help...
On this page "here":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/heroesunchained/wikis/thread-item-characteristics-table I have a table. The very top row, I'd like to have the text centered without resulting to building a HTML table. Anyone know if it's possible with textile? Here's the code below:

Gah! When I previewed the code, even with the PRE tags, It didn't look correct here. I'll just post it in the actual link above.

Once upon a time, I stumbled across an ad-banner for Obsidian Portal. With only a passing interest, I created my account using the third-party login through Facebook. Years later, I have a minor obsession at tinkering with my campaign website, but I still have to login using the Third-Party Facebook login.
Sometime in the last year, I noticed that the image links for third-party login were broken. All four images linked to the same rpxnow site, so I never bothered reporting it until earlier in May. What I discovered is that the problem is well-known and will be corrected in the reforge of OP. Until then, those of us with CSS-OCD might want an alternative to broken image links appearing to guests looking at our sites.
I applied a variant of CSS code credited to Madartiste in the CSS Tidbit Compilation discussion to remove the broken image links and supersede the link with a custom button. Keep in mind that this code modifies CSS in the sidebar so it will likely require some tweaks to get it correct. It is part of "red" section noted in the "Knowledge Base":http://help.obsidianportal.com/kb/advanced/custom-css-for-your-campaign
For my site, I had to modify other elements in the sidebar to get the appearance correct.

The code itself is rather simple:
@ #openid-authentication-toggle a.rpxnow img, #openid-authentication-toggle a.rpxnow:active img {display:none;} @

^ This removes the broken images

@ #openid-authentication-toggle a.rpxnow:before, #openid-authentication-toggle a:before {
content: "Third Party Login";
font-family:"Morpheus";
font-size:14px;
color:#B40404;
font-weight:bold;
background-image:url("http://www.obsidianportal.com/assets/bg_table_header-efa160205251cdc0c1e3dc702239413a.gif");
border-style:solid;
border-color:#DAA520;
border-width:1px;
padding-top:2px;
padding-right:10px;
padding-bottom:2px;
padding-left:10px;
float:right;
margin-right:10px;
text-decoration:none;
} @

^ I used a custom font here, I don't recommend it. I've had compatibility issues in different browsers. The main code here is the "content" field, the rest is formatting for whatever you prefer. I chose to go with a text box that resembles a button (and matches the formatting in the rest of my site).

That's pretty much it. Let me know if you have any issues with the code.

Interactive Animated Map

What follows is the developmental process for my "interactive map":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/autumn-dragons/wikis/abanasinia-interactive-map/ . If you're only interested in the code, feel free to skip to those responses (the post was too long for this to fit in the initial posting). Cheers!

While shopping for ideas on improvements for my campaign website, I came across Gaaran's "interactive iPhone map":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/melekar-test/wikis/test-location5
I was impressed and, in the highest form of flattery, promptly copied the HTML and CSS coding. While playing around with the code, I decided:

# Not to use the iphone frame - A fabulous idea for a modern game, but mine is fantasy-based.
# To use different icons - Again, I needed something appropriate for fantasy.
# To streamline the interactive features of the map to increase usability - This also stems from not using the iphone frame. Without the context of a touchscreen, users may not understand how to use the map.

I started with the pre-generated maps from the Dragonlance campaign settings and modules. A lot of my media is modified or borrowed from this type of resource. The map itself is black and white ( __cringe__ , a cartographer's nightmare, but oddly appropriate for the fantasy setting). As for the interactive nature of the map, I wanted users to hover over locations, receive a pop-up menu, and link to related pages (similar to Gaaran's design). I started by plotting hover icons over the background map and selecting custom icons. This worked great and was very close to Gaaran's original code; however, the usability was limited to players who already played in the campaign.
To increase the usability, I decided to add a chronological trail (like the Indiana Jones map) to the background image. This would provide a context for the map and help explain why the majority of links were to different Adventure Logs. For example, hovering over an icon and receiving two links to "Session 1" and "Session 9" may infer that these adventure log posts occurred at this location, but it is vague and equally infers that I missed 2 through 8 in my coding.
The easiest solution available was creating an animated image for the background. I prefer using "GIMP":http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ to create animated images (open source appeals to my stinginess). After several hours over the course of several days, I created something "close":http://cdn.obsidianportal.com/assets/213672/Abanasinia_with_tracks.gif to what I wanted. As you can tell, it's a nightmare of dots that hardly reveal the chronological nature I wanted. I fiddled around with z-index layers of individual animated gifs for each leg, but the rectangular nature of links made this nearly impossible. Instead I went back to the animated background for a redesign.
While I was developing the red-dot trail I use now, my wife was reviewing my progress and asked if the icons could bounce up and down as the trail entered each colored icon. I became highly flustered at the amount of effort it would take to implement all of that into one animated image, but a good idea is a good idea so I had to try. The final file size was a staggering 123MB, but GIMP has a great optimization feature that brought it down to the 273kb size it is now.
All I had to do to implement the new file was change the background image and remove the background image for each hover icon. The "final product":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/autumn-dragons/wikis/abanasinia-interactive-map/ was so appealing to me, that I began developing the next interactive map which covers the remaining adventure logs to date.
