Hello! I'm relatively new around here and setting up my first campaign. I'm interested in changing the way the characters pages display characters. I'm looking to replace the existing format with a much more Wikipedia looking entry. I dislike the way it lists the short description, the author, the PC/NPC status, then the Game System right at the top. I'd ideally like to move these to the bottom of that character's write up. Also, I'd like to make it so the portrait on the right side is enclosed with a table, so I can include quick facts about that character underneath, much like you would see in Wikipedia. Where you would normally see something like in the Oscar Wilde entry on Wikipedia, they have when he was born, when he died, ect, right under the picture, I'd like to use that space to list things like race, class, alignment, ect.

It seems to be possible, based on the dynamic sheets you can select for your game system, but I have no idea how to go about doing this without using a sheet on the list. Can anyone tell me how, or point me in the direction of some instructions?

I recently set up my first campaign (it will actually be someone else's, but I'm setting up the framework under my ascended account). As a test, I sent an invite to myself under another email address. The Invite never arrived - by which I mean that email address never received an invite. I have since Invited the entire party (via email) - to the best of my knowledge, nothing has arrived.
In looking at various invite problems, I note there is a suggestion to use their account names instead of their email address. This implies that in order to be Invited to a campaign, you must FIRST have an Obsidian Portal account. Is this correct? Not being able to Invite an outside party (even if they need to set up an account afterwards) seems... well, rather useless. I'm hoping I'm faced with some other issue, technical or otherwise, but if membership in Obsidian Portal is a prerequisite to being invited, I was unaware of it.

Please enlighten me.
thanks!

Hello all,

I'm trying to pretty up my wiki so I've been messing around on a test site. I think I've pretty much decided on my theme but I'm still working on some of the organization and layout.

So to cut a boring story short: I need some help. I really have no code experience and everything I've done so far has basically been cut and pasted with some trial and error thrown in for spice. I have figured out how to create an image/map that has 'hot spots' on it so that you can simply click a section and it rushes you off to what ever you linked it to...and I've figured out how to blend background images with a custom site menu...but I haven't managed to blend them together.

What I would like to do is have the capabilities of this "page":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/silvertears/wikis/testmap with this "page":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/silvertears/wikis/geography

So I'm using this code for the 'hot spot' page:

And I'm using this code for the background/menu page:

So I guess I'm asking is there a way to simplify or blend these two disparate ways of putting the image on the screen so that I can still line up the image at the top and have clickable hot spots on the map?

Hey all. I've been trying to figure out reasonable formulas to figure how many physical homes (residences) would be in a settlement so when I'm drawing my maps I can have a grasp of the scope and size of a settlement. This, mind you, is a direct result of my need to micromanage my campaigns because I'm crazy and apparently like to do waaaaay too much work on my campaigns. So here's my line of thought, and I appreciate anyone who can weigh in with good opinions:

The setting is medieval fantasy, D&D 3.5 to be specific.

Thorps, hamlets, and even small villages are usually agricultural centers that have large familial units who work to plant, cultivate, farm, ranch, and harvest goods for themselves and larger portions of whatever kingdoms they're a part of. Once we get into larger villages, towns, cities, and metropolii(?metropolises?metropodopoliseses?) the familial units taper down in scale - on average.

What I've come up with:

A thorp will have at least 20 people as designated by the DM's Guide. Divide the population by the average familial unit which could contain between, say, 5-10 persons. To keep it simple, let's say 7 on average. This means that the thorp will have approximately 3 homes (not necessarily including businesses, churches, etc.)

Hamlet at least 81 population, 6 in home per average, 14 homes total.

Village 401, 5 in home per average, 80 homes.

Small town 901 pop, 4 in home p/aver, 225 homes.

Large town 2001 pop, 4 in home p/a, 500 homes.

Small city 5001 pop, 3 in home p/a, 1667 homes.

Large city 12001 pop, 3 in home p/a, 4000 homes.

Metropolis 25001 pop, 3 in home p/a, 8334 homes.

These all seem relatively plausible to me, but again, any further insight or suggestion is welcome! Thanks!

I'm having some strange problems with wiki page names. I'm trying to import my wiki from "Wizards Groups":http://community.wizards.com/sydarksun/wiki/, but I'm running into some problems. First, Wizards allows (in fact, encourages) pages with titles like [[House Rules:Background Benefits]]. When I try to make a "page":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/sydarksun/wiki_pages/house-rules-background-benefits with that name, it lets me, but there's no way that I can find to access it. No wiki link that I have been able to construct actually successfully links to the page that got made. So what's its wiki address? And if colons are illegal characters, why was I allowed to make the page?

Secondly, I'm having an even stranger problem with the links to the "Help":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/sydarksun/wikis/help page that I made. The link to the Help page on the Help page works just fine, but on my new "Main":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/sydarksun/wikis/main-page page, even though the [[Help]] link is formatted the same way, the links show up red, want to go to a new page, and if I create that page, it's named "Help-0." The only thing odd about the Main page is that it was originally copied and pasted from my Wizards page, linked above.

What's going on here?

I am starting a campaign, and I need help with a key NPC. For those who know it my campaign is starting with the d&d 4E starter campaign, Beneath the Village of Harken. My NPC in mind will be Old Kellar, but I dont want him to just be an elder dwarf from the village. he is bringing the characters together, and providing insight and help through the rest of the campaign.

So far what i have in mind is to act like the narrator in Jim Henson's "Storyteller", an old man with a nack for stories and love for adventure.

Ideas I have had so far have been for him to be like G-Man from half life, an extra planar being who has seen the potential in the heroes and has some plan in mind for them. He would posses otherworldly knowledge, but never let the characters to know this, but he will be able to help them in times of need with information, which he will reagard as "something I heard'. If this is the case, Im not sure how to play him or spec him.

Another idea is have him be a fellow adventurer, shape shifter, intrigued by the chance to learn the tales of the heroes and simply follow them around. Essentially he would spy on them for his own amusement.

Also, I thought about making him work like ninja ninja from afro samurai, just following them around everywhere, babbling.

Any help on how i can do this or better ideas would be great, THANKS!

So one of the things I noticed about my favorite campaigns is that they have amazing Main Pages. Mine on the other hand was more designed to welcome my players and explain the site to them since none of them had used OP before. Now that they have become accustomed to the site I want to make a nice main page to welcome visitors and get their attention. But I have almost NO idea on what to do. I was hoping for any tips or suggestions from anyone. As a warning this post might be tedious as the next two parts are basic game background and campaign background to help people in order to help me

Game Background:Legend of the Five Rings (often abbreviated "L5R") is a fictional setting that covers in detail the fantastical land of Rokugan, a nation whose culture and history is based on that of feudal Japan. It was originally a card game but then was developed into a RPG as well. The story is driven in large part by decisions made by the card game tournament winners held each year.

Campaign background: As mentioned some of the story decisions are based of what the winner of the card game tournaments want to happen. This has led to some very....interesting..... twists in the story line including coups, alliances between millennium old enemies, and other such things. The goal of my campaign is to change some of those more interesting twists into a reality that pleases me more....or something even more twisted and horrible depending on the decisions and whims of my players.

OK, now that a little background was presented I would love to hear peoples suggestions for front page goodness. Thanks in advance to everyone for even the smallest idea!
From what I can tell, while that value is still blank, it automatically turns into an input field. "Click to Edit"

What if, for styling, I want to use that value later (I realize that it might not always be the input I expect, but assume for the moment that I know it will be a numeral between 1 and 10)?

How do I display that value "dsf dsf_prowess" elsewhere on the sheet? ????

Hi guys

I'm having a bit of a technical problem.

I can't seem to link a wiki page (using the standard buttons in the editor) to any page named with numbers in it.

I have 3 journal entries called; Blood Simple, Blood Simple V.2 & Blood Simple V.3

The code looks like this

Session 30 Authors: [[Blood Simple | Arribacca]] [[Blood Simple V.2 | Manco]] [[Blood Simple V.3 | Tyr]]

And comes up as

Session 30 Authors: Arribacca [[Blood Simple V.2 | Manco]] [[Blood Simple V.3 | Tyr]]

The first page is fine, the 2nd and third don't work and view as the native code on the final page...

I've had this issue with other pages, anytime I 'number' them- Part '1' etc...

Here's the actual page (my home page) entry is at the bottom.

Any ideas what i'm doing wrong?

Thanks guys...

Hi there- newbie to OP and most coding. I'm trying to make my Adventure Log all pretty, but the last post I put up was 1300 words and is clogging out all the other entries.

Is there a way to insert a 'Read More' type of break that would show up on the main Adventure Log listing page but not the specific Adventure Log post?

Thanks in advance!

Well I'm working on doing my first play by post game ever, I was wondering how people deal with the combat in a play by post since you can't be there in person to use mini's and not every one is on at the same time, so needless to say I'm extremely curious. I know perhaps some may use a VTT but at the moment I'm at a loss.

A lot of the time I get weird questions and interesting scenarios posed to me by my players and other DMs. Well the suggestions and advice I dish out go largely forgotten because of my own poor memory. Recently I was approached by another DM, one of my 'disciples' as I call them and she wanted to create a blog for DM/GM advise. So consider this a shameless plug!

Is there any way to edit the Character/Calender/Items/Forums/Maps/Comments pages? I've poked around quite a bit and looked at some other sites people have made, but as far as I can see, it seems like no one is able to access the settings for these pages. I'd rather not create extra pages but I'd prefer that then having ones that are customized while others are stock format. Is this how it is or did I miss something? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

"On the advanced FAQ":http://help.obsidianportal.com/kb/advanced/creating-a-dynamic-character-sheet-template-dst

it says to download the devkit so we can develop locally and get it working before we attempt to upload. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. So I am attempting to do that....

So.... where's the devkit? "Github says this":https://github.com/obsidianportal/dynamic_sheet_templates

Removing DSTs since they are stored in database now.

And I don't see a way to download the devkit. (the instructions say click "Download Sources" ... none such, and the "Download" button shows no files).

Hi everyone. I'm a longtime user first time GM and find myself posting more content. I was wondering if there was a general etiquette guide somewhere. In particular I was wondering about what common practice is for linking. If one character or page is listed several time in a wiki do you typically link all instances or just the first? An article or guideline for similar practices would be appreciated.
