Hi all! This is my first post here and I'm excited to finally access this part of our gaming community. On to business...

I am an HTML noob - like ZERO experience. What little I've managed to accomplish was due in no small part to the FAQ's and this fine forum. I've got most of the content I want in my wiki but now I'm trying to snazz it up a bit like add a background behind the pages similar to what's found in "this month's featured campaign":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/cthulhusupremusest. In my case it will look like parchment paper. I've been able to get a picture to display using _div_ tags but it's only displaying as one small, fixed pic. I've also managed to make it not repeat but the size is still a challenge. Can any of you experienced developer-types offer some friendly advice?

Thanks in advance for your help and feel free to check out my 80% completed campaign "Majeria":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/majeria!

This weekend, I was inspired to create a textile-formatted stat block to use for my campaign's npcs and unique creatures. I was inspired by ChainsawXIV's "4E monster stat-block":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/sanction/wikis/templates-and-tools but wanted to create something that utilized more compact Textile coding and which could be used in a 3.5 or 3rd edition campaign.
I'm curious what methods people use to track spells and spell-like abilities for NPCs and/or monsters in their games. As a relatively new GM (2 years behind the screen) I definitely still rely on written spell descriptions during the course of a game. My campaign also regularly features complex NPCs whose special abilities/spells must be tracked. I often find myself struggling to balance efficient use of game prep time with detailed note taking and I'm curious about what has worked well for others in order to facilitate rules retrieval without slowing game play or bogging down prep time. Do you do the classic, post-it on the spell's page, the simpler page number next to the spell, do you write out a summary in the character notes, make flash cards, only use spells with which you are familiar? Inquiring minds want to know.

Recently started fumbling around with the new textile parser.. Was wondering:

Is there a way to apply coding to the characters/forums/maps/comments subsections?

I figure there isn't since you can't edit the base pages like with the Home/Adventure Logs/Wiki's but I don't want to be caught with pie in my face if someone found a way to work around it.
Lookin' forward to any responses, have a safe Halloween folks!

I'm really not sure if this is the forum to place this in, but I thought I'd give it a try. I'm having issues that I hoped one of you wonderful people could help me with. I've spent some time wandering through the tips located here and managed to put together my site as I wanted based on some of the help that is already posted here. However, I'm having problems with the main page. My site can be found at http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/eternalmyst.

My problem is that the coding works on the wiki page, but not on the main page. Those are the only two that I have done the final update too because I can't seem to make it work on both pages. I've even completely copied the entire first wiki page onto the main site page and it still doesn't work. The links in the sidebar take me to a 404 error every time. Well, not every time, they work the second I update, that first screen where you still have the "Continue Editing" button at the top. However, once I am off that page, the links don't work.

Everything works fine on the Wiki page, but not on the main site page. Anyone have any ideas?

*edit* - Figured out that the only link that worked was the adventure log, so I had the idea to make all the links actual links instead of the [[ ]] references. Seems to work that way. Still got a lot to work on, but I'd welcome feedback if anyone has any ideas. Though again, not sure if this is the correct forum to ask for such things.

As you can see the problem is that I can't figure out how to position the text correctly. I did the current position of the text by trial and error (don't know if this expresion is valid in english but bare with me) and some of the words inside the boxes look fine, but for some boxes (e.g. neck or implement) I can't align the text vertically the way I want to.
Is it possible to create anchored page segments that will appear as options for map markers on the map page? I'm pretty green when it comes to this coding stuff, so even if it's possible that doesn't meant I'm going to get it right away. First things first though, if it can be done then great.

My current campaign is more or less a test for us. It's a short-ish arc that will get us into a new system and a new online element in OP. The PCs all come from the same small town. I uploaded the map to this town and created a dedicated wiki page for every building of note in town so that I can place map markers on them. But I'd rather have all of these individual buildings detailed on the main entry for the town instead of giving them their own pages, which is the reason for my question.

Here's my wiki. Any advice would be great.
I figured out the pattern, and I've kind of been working around it, but I need to know if this is an Obsidian Portal thing or perhaps a local ISP throttling my bandwidth at exactly 4AM, and it just happens to always coincide with my time on Obsidian Portal.

Hey, I'm a new user having some difficulties. I started my wiki section with a main page that lists the major sections I wanted to start working with. For the "Player's Guide" section, there were going to be setions such as "Races & Classes", "Skills & Feats", etc.

My problem is that for sections that have just one or two words without the "&" inbetween them, everything is cool: I put in the tags for a wiki-link (the "[[" and "]]"), and everything turns out fine for stuff like "Treasures" and "Magic Items". I get a link that prompts me to make a new wiki entry. When I click on the link, I can put stuff in and save it, and the link becomes an active page.

But any of the links I try to make with an "&" won't work. They make no new wiki link in red; they just give me the raw text of "[[Races & Classes]]". I tried using the raw code for it (&), but that gave the same thing. I can make a wiki page from scratch called "Races & Classes", but I can't link the damn thing back to the Main Page; when I hit the Link button on the right, it just spits in "[[Races & Classes | Races & Classes]]" and I still have the same problem, no wiki link.

Can someone help me? I've tried different formatting, but nothing seems to work. Should I just give up making it look the way I want and try something else?

However, since the last update, the Character Crunch section of all new characters interpret a +1 as the start tag of underlining, and will randomly underline whole sections of my text.
See the correct display method here: http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/astorian/characters/dragonhide-guard
And the way things are now here: http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/astorian/characters/temple-guards

I did a search and looked through the tag cloud, but didn't see anything about this. If I'm doing this wrong, I'm sorry. This is sort of my first post.

I was just wondering, what kind of things are okay to upload as character portraits? Obviously, no porn or anything, but I mean, like, what kind of pictures?

Our main Gamemaster likes having real people, so a lot of us will look for pictures of celebrities that sort of fit. Sometimes I shop them a little, change the eye color or hair color, small changes. Occasionally, after everyone's shown their picture, I'll draw some of them based on what I was shown, but it takes me a while to get a good drawing, so that's slow.

I guess my question here is, is it okay to upload the "actor" pictures as the character portrait rather than something drawn by me? Or is that looked down upon?

So I've been running my campaign (4e D&D) for a few months now, but I am getting to the point where I really need to flesh out exactly how many people live in my continent of Nilriel. How the geography and history works is:

* Nilriel is the largest continent on the planet (Aden) and consists of grasslands, forests, a northern tundra, mountains in the east and west, and a semi-tropical southern coast

* Humans _were_ the most populace race in Nilriel, but a gods-blessed army of Orcs swept over them and killed about 80% of them

* The most populace races are currently Haflings and Elves, though the continent also holds Dragonborn, Dwarves, Eladrin, Gnolls, Gnomes, Goblins, Goliaths, Half Elves, Half Orcs, Kobolds, and Tieflings

* Nilriel is the _largest_ continent, but is only the second most populace, being about half the population of the largest.

* I am estimating Nilriel at about 20-25% of the world's population.

The gist of my problem is that I can't decide what the population _is_. I'm thinking somewhere in the single or double-digit millions, but can't really decide. I was wondering if anyone had some advice for choosing or perhaps criteria you've used that maybe I should consider. Ballpark numbers would also be appreciated.

Like, I want to like to all of my PC's. I have a PC tag. I want to be able to just link to the page that I would get to by clicking on the tag. Do I have to use HTML for that?

Hey folks. I'm new to OP and new to all this HTML language and stuff so bear with a newb question please.
I'm trying to link character pages to the regular wiki pages. As when you reference a character being the King of a Kingdom. Within the Kingdom page you name the King, and you want it to link to their Character page. The side bar seems to say you do this [[:King]]. But it doesn't work. Help?

Hey - I was wondering if there was any Javascript compatibility with Obsidian Portal? I know that there is a device by which random die rolls can be made, and I think that runs with javascript, but I was wondering if there was a way to call a random number, possibly based on the clock time? If that's the case, and we can use Javascript, I can help generate if/else statements for people who want elements to display randomly on their webpage (For example, if you want a different statement to display every time the page is refreshed? - I'm looking at you, Duskreign :) ) A simple switch statement could work if you wanted it to just work on the day of the week. If we can't use javascript, does anyone know a way to do it via HTML, with the tools that are available?

I'm currently having issues with one of the pages on my wiki formatting oddly. I'm trying to have pages with the formatting of some of my templates, shown in the Textile markup so that I can copy and paste without having to open the edit page. I'm decently proficient with the basic textile formatting, and know very little about other times of formatting (except what I may have taken from the forums here). For some reason, though, when I try to format this page:

http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/halcyon/wikis/god-entry

I end up with strange formatting, and I'm not sure what's causing it, or how to fix it.

Here is what I have typed in:

!{float:right}god symbol image small enough to fit above line, or hit enter until appropriate!

---
_Common epithets_

*Symbol:*

*Alignment:*

*Portfolio:*

*Worshippers:*

*Cleric Alignments:*

*Domains:*

*Favored Weapon:*

Description of the god himself goes here, along with pertinent stories.

*Dogma*
This section covers the beliefs of the followers. Include philosophies, taboos, and rituals. Also include any different sects that may exist among the followers of the god.

*Clergy and Temples*

Who worships the god? This could include racial/class leanings, as well as alignments. Describe the common appearance of the priests of the god, as well as the general layout and common location types of the temples. Also describe how visitors might be treated here (if they are a common enough occurence.)

*Optional Entries:*

If desired, include a stat block of the god or its avatar, as well as an associated creatures, artifacts, familars, pets, etc.

If anyone could spot what I've done wrong, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Non-Video Documentation?

Is there any "Getting Started" documentation which is NOT in video format? I read a hell of a lot faster than anyone can talk, and I can cut/paste/review written words much more easily than I can navigate in a video to find the 5 seconds where someone is blathering about the precise information I need. If talking were more useful for conveying information than writing, we would not have invented writing in the first place.

I have found the link to the FAQs (which seem useful), but I can't really start asking questions (frequent or otherwise) until I've begun to use the site, and the idea of sitting around while someone yammers at me on a video before I can do anything is really, really, off-putting.
