Greetings portallers! For those of you who may not know, Obsidian Portal has been "nominated for the third year in a row":http://www.ennie-awards.com/blog/?page_id=2156 to receive an *ENnie Award*! We've been nominated for _Best Website_ and we'd love for you to take a few moments out of your busy days to "head over to the polls and vote for us!":http://www.ennie-awards.com/vote/

You can only vote once per IP address so keep that in mind. The voting setup is pretty simple. Here's the gist of it as explained from the voting site itself:

bq. For example, if you only wish to vote for one product in the Best Adventure category, simply click the drop down arrow next to that product and select 1 and don't worry about the other four products. But if you really like all the products under the Best Cartography category, you can rank them in order from your most favorite by inputting a 1 to least favorite by inputting a 5 (this will be 1 to 10 for the Product of the Year and Fans' Favorite Publisher categories, as well as next year's judges). If you don't like a product, don't vote for it. You cannot hurt a product's chances of winning by putting it on a low ranking ballot. To the contrary, you'll help it out if the race goes down to the wire.

So please, click your browsers on over and slap a big ol' *1* next to *Obsidian Portal*! "GO AND VOTE NOW!":http://www.ennie-awards.com/vote/

I was looking at a recent friend request and realized I was racking up a fair number of friends - suppose I write a lot for some of my games or something. Either way I got to thinking "Is there a badge for XX number of friends" so I prowled around looking at profiles and found, no, there is none. While I can see the negative impact of badge hunting leading to friend clutter, I also see how it could bring more community to OP and also encourage us to look into each others campaigns.

As a side thing I would make a plea that when people favorite campaigns that they try to leave a comment about the game on there, thanks all!

Hello fellow players and GM's! I have a question and I'd like to turn to you all for advice because you have never let me down before. In my next session of my Star Wars: Dawn of Darkness campaign my players are going to be robbing the contents of a highly guarded bank vault. I have a few ideas for some high tech security obstacles as well as some more traditional traps, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for cool and amazing sci-fi/fantasy ways of guarding a bank vault that would REALLY leave my player party with their jaws on the floor.

I'm talking about any idea from a trap that sucks all the oxygen out of a room if an intruder is detected to a vault door that's actually a killer security droid in disguise just waiting to attack a would-be robber. Or it could even be an elevator that lowers the whole room down 1000 feet into the planet's crust that's triggered when a break-in is detected. Any and all ideas are welcome and I eagerly await what you have to share.

This method of gathering ideas worked out quite well with my Mind Flayer interrogation session so let's here what you all have to say!:)

Okay fellow GMs, one of my players just posed a question to me that has me a bit wary of impending munchkinism.

She is playing a bard and really wants to get her hands on a harmonizing weapon, which extends the effects of bardic music feats to 10 rounds after the bard stops singing. She specifically mentioned "stacking" the bardic feats into the sword. (i.e. sing inspire courage for 1 round, then inspire competence, then inspire greatness, so that by the end of the third round, three buffs are going.)

Beyond the implications of having a sword extend these effects, can a single bard put multiple effects in place, simultaneously? Many effects last for a certain number of rounds after the bard stops playing, but I can't find an official answer.

My initial thought is to say no.
I see sustained bardic music effects as similar to getting an awesome song stuck in your head. If it is overlapped by a different awesome song, the first one goes away, because people can't really hold multiple disparate melodies in their heads without it completely changing the nature of the song.

Anyone have advice on this? Would it actually be a game breaker, or is it no different than a wizard stacking buff spells before a fight?

Hi guys. Totally new here, and to wiki's in general. I'm in love with the idea right now, of writing everything for my campaign at home on my laptop, on my desktop or anywhere else from my phone, and then showing up to the gaming table with nothing but some dice and my phone. So I'm not sure if I'm using the site quite as intended, but I'm definantly using it.

So... Can everyone who views my content also view the GM only part of it? As I said above, I'm writing adventures on this thing that haven't yet been run, so obviously, I'm worried about one my my players happening across my wiki and seeing all the nasty little surprises I have dreamed up for them. Insert evil laugh here.

Good health and long life to you, oh mighty html wizards - mere mortal here, beseeching your aid and succor.

In creating my latest wiki, I boldly used some code that I saw in an old thread which I can no longer locate to create a lefthand sidebar that floats off to the side of the main wiki-space. Unfortunately, it seems to be causing an issue which blocks links on the left side of the screen within the width of the main wiki-space, which means that users have to scroll the page to move those links above or below the range of the sidebar in order to use them. Obviously, this is bad.

I've tinkered with the code, but I don't see any way to fix it, and my html is quite weak to begin with.

My question is this: is there any way to salvage my floating sidebar, or must I abandon it for an in-line one? Links to articles, threads, and other potential sources of answers are also welcome.

Thanks for listening.

Amen.

First off I just want to say that I love the concept of Mind Flayers, and have ever since I was introduced to D&D. Specifically it's their nature that I find so fascinating, a creature seemingly designed for complete domination of sentient life through horrific psionic manipulation and control. Hence why I'm happy that in the next session of my game my player party MAY be taken prisoner by one such Mind Flayer (in my Star Wars game no less :D). This character is an ancient being, a traveler from a far off world who has endured centuries of isolation. What I need help with from the community is figuring out how to role play this interogation of sorts with my party.

What I hope is to have this Illithid "speak" to my players one at a time, picking their brains for information on where they come from and their perspectives on the galaxy. So what I'm hoping to get from the community is suggestions for habits of a Mind Flayer I could incorporate, personality traits and characteristics that people in the community have picked up over the decades in running games with Mind Flayers.

Any suggestions at all for how to make my players Mind Flayer experience more authentic are welcome and I thank you all in advance for any advice your willing to share!

I'm interested in hearing how people who are running pre-4E campaigns deal with weapon proficiencies -particularly in 3x- & with exotic weapons.

I have to admit, the rules for exotic weapons bug me a bit. While sometimes, a weapon is clearly exotic and would require extensive special training to use effectively (e.g. a spiked chain) other times, the classification seems unwarranted (barbed dagger, repeating crossbow) A repeating crossbow, for instance, functions just like any other crossbow when attacking. aim and shoot. The major change comes in how you reload at the end of the cartridge, so adding the default non-proficiency penalty to the attack roll, doesn't make a lot of sense.

It seems impractical for the vast majority of players to burn a feat just to become proficient in a particular exotic weapon... meaning that there are a whole slew of weapons on the equipment lists that likely never get used.

Does anyone else house-rule on weapon proficiencies to work around this, and if so, what do you do?

My players are currently adventuring through a dungeon complex, which is the lair of a blue dragon. They have met him, he kicked them out of his lair after stealing everything in their bag of holding and heward's handy haversacks, and now they have to get back in and kill him.

I've got that part figured out. However, I would love some input on the next step.

See, my PCs came to this ruin as part of a gnomish led expedition tasked with finding ancient sites and items of arcane note. The gnomes will likely want some, if not all of this dragon's horde, as it is located at the site they came to find. The gnomes also own the airship the party used to fly out to the Wastes where the ruins are located, so without it, the group is going to be hard-pressed to transport over 100,000g worth of coin, gems and other items the several hundred miles back to civilization and their base of operations.

There is also the challenge that, since the gnomes are on a research expedition, they will likely want to stick around and do research for a while... This doesn't work for the party, because they have to find a cure for the blight before the end of the summer... which is about 1/2 over.

The way I see it, there are a couple possible options:
First: Create an impetus to get the gnomes moving! This is fairly easy. They are based at a half-orc camp which is under constant threat from a nearby orcish horde, which is mystically tied to the PC's monk. (Solution: drawn by the bond, the orcs move against the camp setting up a "we gotta go!" scenario.

If I go with this solution, there are a couple directions things could go:
1. A bargaining encounter with the gnomes in which the PCs have to justify their share. (This would likely require me to establish a larger than intended pile of loot, expecting the PCs will not get all of it, but could leave them overpowered if they find some way to circumnavigate the bargaining.)
2. The party's wizard decides to start teleporting the loot back to their keep. He can only memorize a couple teleport spells each day, so this would take some time and would likely require that he bring in other wizardy help. Plus, he officially works for the gnomes... so it would set up a loyalty dilemma.
3. The party takes off with the gnomes aboard the airship saying they'll divvy things up in flight... the bargaining might ensue, or the group might try to take over the airship (unlikely, because they are all goody-two-shoes... but still, a risk.

One important thing to note is that my group is adamant about getting their just rewards. They seem to think that everything I describe as valuable in a dungeon is intended as part of the treasure, and they feel cheated if they can't carry it all out... hence a proliferation of heward's handy haversacks.

Any thoughts on how best to handle this? It feels like a great roleplaying seed, but also potentially dangerous for game-group morale.

Hey everyone, I started this project a LONG time ago it seems and we had some pretty great contributions, but then I sort of let it fall by the wayside. A shame, I say, and to that end, I have resumed work on it! For those that are new to the forums and haven't seen the Fantastinomicon, it's a repository that I started, along with some other prominent OPites to collect generic gaming tidbits, from items to scenarios, locations to monsters, we offer rule-less descriptions for use in your games. My first new contribution is a list of 5 different fantasy/medieval ruling bodies, for drag-and-drop use in your game. I have included names, some descriptions, and some thoughts on how they work.

If anyone of the new faces on the forums has anything that they would like to share with other DMs, this is the place to do it! If you're interested in contributing, please either join as a "player" or you can send me the information you'd like to post. I hope to get the ball rolling once again!

Greetings All,

I am GM'ing for the first time with veteran roleplayers in 3.5 D&D and I was told about Obsidian Portal by one of my players. I am using these gaming sessions to improve my writing skills and to help them keep track of my very involved campaign. So check out my wiki if you want to keep up with my sessions. I am still improving my wiki so please bear with me.

We have completed 5 sessions so far but I only have 2 up. This is due to my real life schedule and the complexity of session 2 and the current sessions. Hopefully, within the next few weeks I will have up to session 5 up.

Thank you very much for your time.

I was just reading the list of potential achievements for forum members earlier and caught myself coming back again and again to the "Emissary" achievement. What sort of conventions and meetups does Obsidian Portal generally attend where a forum member such as myself could help out promoting the site and spreading the word to other gamers?

I'd be more than happy to help promote the site in any way I could as it's been a great community to be a part of.

Hey all, just wanted to share that my current campaign, Broken Empire, has come to an end. That's not to say that I will not be continuing to work on my campaign setting, and working on my site, and generally hanging out around here. For those that are interested I have the adventure log laid out "here":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/melekar/wikis/the-story-so-far for easy perusal. It's a lot to read, so I understand if people don't want to take the time, but I would love to hear what people thought about specific events, sort of some feed back to learn what people like better than others. It's all in chronological order, and it's just the main story, if you want to read it with character journals interspersed, then check out the regular "adventure log.":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/melekar/adventure-log Thanks for the support on the site guys, it wouldn't be what it is without the encouragement and inspiration of the OPers.
