Hello All,

It's been a while since I've been able to check in with everyone here at the Portal, and I've missed my friends here. My wife and I just moved from the U.S. to Auckland, New Zealand where I will be pursuing my PhD, and the past month and a half has been spent with family. As such, I've not had much time to drop by, and, sadly, will not likely have much time to regularly check in here at the forums once I begin my PhD in earnest. However I will drop by from time to time since I really do love this community and can't bear the thought of not being a part of it. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the forums here, in my estimation this is one of the very best RPG forums out there.

Cheers,

Well I finished with my buttons.

Now I am trying to decide on layout. I am supposed to work with HurstGM on it when he gets a chance, we had a minor scheduling conflict last time and I am waiting to hear back from him so I can get this new layout up.

While I wait I thought I would gauge the temperature of the crowd since you guys were helpful when I was working on my banner.

Which Layout do you Favor?

"Option 1":http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/A-G-A/MockUp1-1.png - Internal navigation bar

"Option 2":http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/A-G-A/MockUp2-1.png - External floating nav bar

Vote and be heard!

Please disregard the sloppiness of my mock up it is just pasted together images (some buttons are missing as well). I am sure the actual layout will be elegant enough (I pray).

Also I wont have to re-size the buttons right? I just made them all huge size in gimp and figured when we place them via code we can re-size as needed?

Has anyone tried anything like this before and have any advice, both from a using obsidian portal and from a combining the systems aspect?

Specifically, I saw I am supposed to put in what system I use when starting the campaign. I also saw that you can get character sheets specific to that system. Is there a way to put in two systems so that my characters can have a Pathfinder sheet and a FATE sheet?

I love searching the campaigns and seeing what other people are doing on OP. Many times I find inspiration in your campaigns that I can use for my own. What drives me nuts is seeing a recent update for a campaign that catches my eye only to discover it is a closed campaign. I saw one tonight that had me before I ever clicked it. My heart started racing, my interest piqued, and I clicked with the hopes of finding greatness. Instead I got nothing but another moment of frustrations. I wish I could understand the need to close the campaigns. I have played in a closed campaign last year and it drove me nuts not being able to share my thoughts and ideas. What is your take on this subject?

I thought I posted this last night but dont see it up - perhaps the forum hamsters ate it.

Since I am getting better with Gimp as I struggle along learning it (was doing work on creating buttons) I decided to take a stab at a few other banner options.

I am going to mirror the text in the banner with my buttons so bear that in mind while voting. (I hate you - stop posting on the forums is not a vote by the way.)

Option "one":http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/A-G-A/Banner7.png gloss BWF, no glow, glowing runes, centered text.

Option "two":http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/A-G-A/Banner6.png BWF in caps, offset, glow effect.
Option "three":http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/A-G-A/Banner5.png centered BWF in glow text.
Option "four":http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/A-G-A/Banner4.png centered BWF, no glow.

Tell me about your experiences with evil characters. Do you get true evil out of your group or are they evil posers who just became "EVIL" because it is cool? Personally when I play evil characters they will engage in rape, murder, torture, and worse. This usually results in the party puting me down in order to save the world or perhaps themselves. lol

I often find that players wish to be evil but then don't truly play evil characters. They take all the disadvantages like cruel, sadistic, caulous, etc but when push comes to shove they don't have the characters act in a truly evil manner. They always default to their own personal set of out of game morals. When someone does actually indulge in being truly evil, the rest of the group tends to react in a "WTF" manner. This bugs the hell out of me. If you are going to take the EVIL tag then be evil for evil's sake. Do the bad deeds and relish in the results.

Since the early eighties I have been fascinated with the possibility of taking some of the confusion and work out of pencil and paper games by using computers to do what they do well -calculate, look stuff up and present text on demand. Now I am a partner in an android app company and I think I have finally found a venue for what I want to do. I created an app based on hyperlinked tables and text that contained all the stuff I used on a regular basis to DM 1st edition, then I started adding stuff that "would be nice to have", so I ended up with all the character tables, attribute tables, hit tables, saving throw tables, spell tables and spells up to 5th level and other stuff. Then my partner who is a better programmer than me got involved and we made it a little prettier and easier to use.

We have posted a beta version on the android market. I submit it to you for your approval. It is still heavily influenced by the way my group plays (currently no assassin, bard, cavalier, barbarian or thief acrobat info as we don't play them - may add it in if there is a demand. Didn't include weapon specialization or a lot of other stuff from the arcana era as we don't use it. Did include most all the spells I knew existed - even orisons. Working on getting more data in there asap, but no guarantees when. Just keep updating it from the market. The interface is where we want it pretty much, I am working on inputting spells - its an ongoing thing.

I believe all of the stuff I used is covered by the open gaming license and don't believe I am stepping on anyone's toes - but if I am please tell me. It is not as polished as it will be and I am also sure there are typos and broken links so please yell if you see something. I did reword things where I thought it needed it and remove all references to copyrighted trademarks (Per the open gaming license and WOC) I found. It will run on a phone but at least a 7" tablet is best to run it and a 10" is better. Its a free download, there is no spyware or other nasty stuff, so try it out - if you don't like something or something is broken let me know here and I will try to fix it ASAP.

I've been tossing around an idea for a while now, and I think I'm going to finally implement. I've had subpar involvement from my players on OP recently, and normal incentives (Hero Points, etc.) don't seem to be working. My new idea is this: every so often (a week or so, maybe) I'm going to upload the stats to an NPC. Not a bio, or description (which are already up) but their actual nuts-and-bolts game mechanics, something I don't let my players usually see. Obviously, I won't post major, recurring villians stats, but my players often pester me about the stats of allies or defeated enemies (how many hit points did it have? How is her Will save so high?). I'm going to begin with a good NPC friend of the PCs who died last session.

Has anyone ever tried this? If you haven't, then please steal it if you like it, and if you have, tell me how it went. Even if you haven't, tell me your opinions on it. Do you think it will work? Would it motivate you? Any other comments/observations? (For example: this works well for Pathfinder, what my group is playing at the moment, but wouldn't work on less crunchy systems). Let me know!

I'm in the early stages of a new campaign after a long spell as an infrequent player, not a GM. I have some really decent players who have made my first game back in the driver's seat much smoother than it might have been, and the plot worked out much better than I thought it would. At the end of the first game, they're in exactly the right place for the plot to advance, but I'm concerned about staying ahead of them and keeping things as epic as they deserve.

I could use some objective help, but I don't want to post details in a public place, since my efforts to get them involved in the campaign site here have resulted in a couple of signups and one guy telling me he's a long time member.

Do we have a place for GMs to share their campaign details privately with other GMs and offer/receive advice? I thought a little bit about hosting a campaign and inviting people in order to use the campaign resources to collaborate. Any thoughts?

I finalized the "Drama Deck design":http://bit.ly/uL5Jor we are using in my campaign. Please check it out and if you think you can adapt to your games, feel free to use. I had the 162 card deck printed and it looks pretty good.

When navigating the page you will only see 27 cards at a time. Look to the bottom right side of the screen for the more button to see the next 27.

Solo

I've been interested in taking the "_Mythic Game Master Emulator_":http://www.mythic.wordpr.com/page9/page9.html for a solo spin, and today I finally had a chance.

I was playing around with a dice roller awhile back, and I asked it to spit out a set of character stats, 3d6 in order. I liked the stats, and turned them into a _Flashing Blades_ character, Urbain de Foresta, chevalier de Saint-Sauvan, a knight with a checkered family history and a penchant for games of chance and women of easy morals.

So this afternoon, I fired up the "flash-based version of the emulator":http://artifex0.50webs.com/GMEmulator.swf to see how _monsieur le chevalier_ would fare.

The chevalier visited a Marseillais tavern to do some gambling. He was invited to play cards by a debauched marquis, and after cleaning the libertine's clock, found another man's rapier slapped across his coins. The tavern keeper told them to take it elsewhere, and the chevalier followed the bravo out of the tavern, after collecting the coin _and_ one of the cheap trollops -servicing- fawning over the marquis.

Outside the chevalier was ambushed by the bravo, then attacked by the trollop he picked up in the tavern and another ruffian, one of the marquis' lackeys.

A three-on-one fight did not look good for the chevalier. The bravo was a better swordsman, so the chevalier would not be able to defend himself against the other two. The chevalier decided to try a trick, entangling the bravo in his cape, then running him through. In a flash the most dangerous of the three opponents was down, but the chevalier didn't count on the trollop, who managed to grapple him and try to choke the life out of him as the other guy bashed away at him with a bastinado. Unable to fight back due to the deathgrip of the trollop, he took a hard shot to the ribs.

Once the chevalier broke free from the trollop and brandished his sword, the lackey decided he'd had enough and ran away. The trollop, on the other hand? Again she tried to choke the chevalier, and when he broke free again, she aimed a vicious kick straight at his junk, then tried to tackle him! Unwilling to cut down a woman, but hemorraghing hit points from her relentless attacks, he smacked her twice with the flat of his sword, and she backed off at last, screeching insults.

The commotion attracted an audience, three cutpurses with drawn daggers. The chevalier, weary and hurt from the attacks, decided to beat a retreat, but the cut purses followed, so he looked for a place to make a stand, finding a stairway where the thieves could only come at him one at a time. Faced with the prospect of fighting a swordsman by turns, the three slunk away in the darkness to find easier prey.

The chevalier made his way back to his lodgings, his winnings stuffed safely in his doublet.

I used a mix of rules, from the _Flashing Blades_ core and some _Traveller_ rules I ported over for my campaign, and the emulator, and I have to say, it was much more fun than I expected it to be. The emulator allows me to throw out ideas as they come up and kick back replies that often take the action in unexpected directions - that's perhaps the hardest thing to come by in solo play.

Frex, I never considered that the trollop the chevalier picked up for a roll in the hay was in league with the bravo and the lackey until the encounter began; I tossed the question to the emulator, and in short order she was kicking the chevalier's ass.

At one point the chevalier was about to lose what little coin that remained to him; at another his life came down to making a parry successfully as a rapier slashed at his head. The 'session' was exciting and funny, and I found myself hanging on the die rolls to see what would happen next.

I've done the solo dungeon exploration thing with _D&D_ and the solo merchant trader thing with _Traveller_ , and I can say this was a notably different experience, fun in ways I didn't expect. I've been "using the emulator when I referee":http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?574031-Using-Mythic-Game-Master-Emulator-as-a-refereeing-tool-two-actual-play-examples my regular game, and it proved to be a fascinating tool for solo play.

You can read the solo log I kept as I played "on my wiki":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/le-ballet-de-l-acier/wikis/solo-game-log-6-dec-2011 .

I'm getting together with the guys again this weekend for our regular campaign. Nothing can replace the social aspect of gaming, the back and forth between the players and the referee. But I'm also acutely aware of the fact that that social time can be very hard to come by. A little fix of solo play now and again seems like a good way to keep the fire burning.

OK so minor irritation rant. My players are agrivating me! So my current game USS Sanctuary is coming to an end. Thats all well and good and life has prevented the endgame from happening yet, but thats not my irritation. My newest game is still set to private until it is ready. I consider it ambitous in several ways mostly because it taxed my programming abilites and well im trying to make it look cool. So its a more character driven story so their backgrounds not the cruncy part of their characters is more important. Of couse i know gamers are nortious for waiting until the last minute and i keep getting told ill get around to it. One guy was done WAY ahead of time, but he coming back from honduras so he is a gaming junky looking for a fix. The rest of them are not getting it done of course. I know this is the plight of the GM and I am trying to be a pain and overly demanding. I was wondering any ideas to get players more engaged. I have thought about electroshock therapy but im sure the battery cables would be uncomfortable.

This is a list of Feats and Class abilities pulled from d20srd. In an earlier post I stated that I wanted to have more open-ended classes. For this I took away class-dependant skill sets and placed them in one of the 3 Feat Pools I have set up. The pools are Agressive, Passive, and Internal. Due to the odd nature of my campaign some Feats or Abilities are either improbable or unneccessary, and have been ommited. If you think I've missed one that can work though, I would love the imput. Also If you see flaws I'd like to know about game breakers before they break my game, lol. Anyway, this is what I have so far:
Cleave [Aggressive] (Stackable)
Diehard
Empower Channel(Spell) [Internal]
Enlarge Channel [Internal]
Extend Channel [Internal]
Far Shot [Aggressive]
Great Fortitude [Passive] (Stackable)
Improved Critical [Passive] (Stackable)
Iron Will [Passive] (Stackable)
Lightning Reflexes [Passive] (Stackable)
Many Shot [Aggressive]
Dodge [Aggressive]
Mobility [Passive]
Mounted Combat [Passive]
Power Attack [Aggressive]
Precise Shot [Aggressive]
Rapid Reload [Passive]
Rapid Shot [Aggressive]
Proficiency (Armor/Weapon/Shield) [Passive]
Guerilla Tacktics [Passive]
Toughness [Passive] (Stackable)
Track [Passive]
Two Weapon Defence [Aggressive]
Two Weapon Fighting [Aggressive]
Weapon Finesse [Passive]
Weapon Expertise [Passive]
Weapon Focus [Passive]
Weapon Specialization [Passive]
Rage [Agressive] (Stackable)
Trap Sense [Passive] (Stackable)
Damage Reduction [Passive] (Stackable)
Inspire Courage or Fear [Aggressive] (Stackable)
Evasion [Passive]
Fast Movement [Passive]
Favored Enemy [Passive] (Stackable)
Sneak Attack [Agressive] (Stackable)
Haggle [Passive] (Stackable)
Hide in Plain Sight [Passive]

Anything I've missed? Anything I've severely messed up on?

I"ve started something rather larger than intended and now find myself in over my head. I've got a homebrew world, homebrew character sheets, and a good sized chunk of homebrew rules. But my players deserve everything I can give them though, right? I've made them custom characters before, but they still feel a little limited and hate feats. We have all the books and everyone spends hours going through the 500+ feats of 3.5e because they want the perfect feat for their character (not their class). They love the world which plays like Avatar:tlab by way of FFXII and Zelda. They love the simplified Char Sheets, and the open-ended rules, but how can I simplify classes and feats? I've been looking at the Skill Tree System from blizzard and the Sphere System from FFX. I want to steer away from flow breakers, and am looking for systems that incorperate skill and ability bonuses. If you have a system that you're working on, or that you perfected that is sort of what I'm looking for I would love to hear from you. Even if I don't use your system your way, I may like one or more ideas. Please help, and if I use even a small part of your system, or even change it, I will give you credit.
