Greeting friends,

I know that we usually stick to RPG related topics and I hope you do not mind me bringing something like this to the forums but extraordinary circumstances compel me to speak to you all here in this way. I am a grad student at UC Davis. As many of you might have heard on the news and seen videos of there was an incident yesterday afternoon on campus which I and countless others witnessed where students peacefully sitting on the ground with their arms interlinked were maliciously pepper sprayed. There are dozens of videos on you tube showing the event from many different angles. One such video is: "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmJmmnMkuEM ":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmJmmnMkuEM

These are my friends and fellow students. One of my friends even received a boot to the face. None of this was necessary.

I urge you to call on the chancellor of UC Davis, who called out the 50+ police in riot gear over a few tents on the public lawn, to resign immediately. She sent out a letter to all UC Davis students and faculty last night speaking in passive voice and absolving herself of all responsibility, which only adds insult to injury. There is a facebook page "event" you can join to show support "https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/events/245178815543373/":https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/events/245178815543373/ as well as a page where you can contact her and send her your thoughts "http://chancellor.ucdavis.edu/contact.php":http://chancellor.ucdavis.edu/contact.php.

This incident has rocked the campus, the community, and is going viral across the country and even the world. Please show your support and tell your friends. This is too big to be ignored.

Thank you and I apologize for veering so far off the usual domains of conversation but I know so many of you and count you as friends that I just had to ask for support.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Much love,

Frivolity

Greetings one and all!

I have two questions/informal poll to pose to everyone:

What is the most frivolous thing you've ever done for your wiki?
What is the most frivolous thing you've ever wanted to do for it?

For me, I've just hit new levels of frivolity due to something I'm working on - I want to get it out of my head before I forget it, so I've spent the last five hours working on the project. I love the concept, it's just a lot of VERY unnecessary work. For something that may not even be used.

So, what are your most frivolous moments?

If you indulge me, maybe I'll indulge you and help you bring them to fruition!

_Edit:_ I realize that the best way to demonstrate frivolity is to actually give you an example: Fortunately for me, I have one that I just finished! I present my completely modular "campaign calendar":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/the-dark-queen-of-the-west/wikis/december-2010

This is designed to display when various events take place during the realtime campaign I'm running - we don't have very many events, but when I do something, I prefer it to be properly done, despite the fact that I don't believe I'll ever really go back into the past for the campaign. I realize there's not too much to look at, but that's mostly what makes it frivolous :)

This past weekend I started playing around with the look of the "Westerlands Wiki":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/the-westerlands/wikis/main-page, which is something I should have done a while ago. I was finally driven to get my rear in gear after poking around "Arsheesh's sites":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/age-of-legends/wikis/main-page, which I can confidently say are some of the most beautifully presented wikis on OP.

In a fit of envious inspiration, I started tinkering with button images, fonts and graphics. I revamped my main page as a test, though I'm not sure I'm satisfied with the direction its going. I like the clean look of the body layout and text. I also like the font I found for my revamped sidebar. However, I'm not sold on the look of the sidebar. I feel like the sidebar background looks a little too tablet-y.

I'm also having trouble with the inline-block attribute for lining up the sidebar and the content. I've always found this particular attribute to be a bit temperamental. For example, while the sidebar and text line up properly in all browsers on my computer at work and at home, when I view it on my GF's computer, the format breaks and the body text appears directly below the sidebar.

I encountered similar breakage just now when trying to add a border to the body content of the main page. When I added a 2px gray border, it caused the fields to stack, even if I reduced the width of the content area by 5px (i.e. more than any added width from the border) To make matters more confusing, everything appeared normal in OP's preview window, but broke when I saved it and viewed the page.

Anyone have tips for making inline block more reliable?

So im writing my game book and im thinking about ideas on publishing. I was origionally thinking about doing it as an electronic downloadable PDF and print on demand if they wanted a hard copy, but as fellow gamers and game masters I would like some opinions. The system is modular and can change per the game needs. I was working a dead end job and had several game ideas. Problem was no one system covered all the things I wanted it to do. That and I was bored out of my mind and needed something to do. I started using some of the skills I gathered from my degree and applied a bunch of math and came up with a 100 based system and rules that covered what I want. I recently tried to use the system with others and found that lacking a game book for refrence the players got frustrated. not that i blame them for it. So i sat down during my month from heck and did the outline and started working on the first few chapters. Well im nearing completion of the book and will be working on the first few moduals. IM guessing im about a month or two away from publishing so i had better get started at least thinking about how im going to deal with it.

I love to look at other people's campaign and I get that some people are private but I hate it when I see a campaign on the main page and click it only to discover it is not available for ME to look at. Some titles sounds real interesting and then you get all excited to see something new only to have a door slammed in your face.

I really wish that the main page would not show any campaigns that are closed to the public.

On another note; I would love to see the Campaign tab altered a tad too. How about it only shows campaigns that have been updated in the past say 90 days. Put a filter in to let you see older ones. It really sucks to find a great campaign on the front page only to discover it is over.

The faces and names of the Obsidian Portal forums community have changed somewhat over the years as older members have retired their campaigns and gone on to other projects and new members have come on board to carry the torch. However one name that some of those of you who are newer to the Portal (and looking for inspiration) should get to know better is "Duskreign":http://www.obsidianportal.com/profile/Duskreign. You may have already seen Dusk's legendary "Wyrmshadow's Campaign":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/wyrmshadow , which is ranked fairly high in popularity over in the campaigns tab, and which got last year's campaign of the year award. However Dusk has also authored a few other sites that have been truly innovative in their use of HTML as well as in their graphical layout.

Due to certain responsibilities Dusk has not been as active at the OP over the last year or so, but I'm writing this "OP Editorial" of sorts to draw the forum community's attention to a new campaign site that Dusk is currently launching called the "Duskreign Prophecy":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/duskreignprophecy. Now again, this site is still in the initial stages, with many pages yet to be created. But what immediately struck me about the site was it's cleanness and simplicity of design. Allot of campaign pages I've seen tend to be fairly "busy" and for that reason, distracting. However in his new site Dusk has created a very simple and elegant interface and has been parsimonious in his use of images and text, selecting only those objects that fit well within his overall design. Dusk has even implemented his own unique "character sheet":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/duskreignprophecy/wikis/drogyn-martok which preserves the aesthetic of the overall site. All in all, this is one of the freshest and most innovative sites that I've seen come out of the Obsidian Portal for some time and I hope that is serves as a source of inspiration for those of you searching for inspiration in creating or refining your own sites.
Cheers,

Stagnation @ "The Gibson Institute":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/the-gibson-institute

A little over a year ago I practiced a little recursion and used an OP wiki as a general purpose knowledge wiki instead of a campaign specific one. Then my real life intruded and violently so. My son had high lead levels in his blood, and much of the last year has been giving him treatments and some remedial therapy and so forth. He is fine now, and I had a whim to go through my emails (I use a non-family/business email for things like Obsidian Portal and XBox live and various forums) and I see a ton from things I've missed. I have about 10 featured campaigns to go check up on, and a lot of exploring to do.

I am going to try and make a better effort to be here, but the first priority is real life, so I cannot make any promises.

**That being said**, I have seen a bit of interest in "The Gibson Institute":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/the-gibson-institute and I may have missed a lot of opportunities there as well. I want to promote a few people to co-GM/GM in there so my own issues don't affect the potential in the future, for the purposes of adding people mostly, though pushing for new content never hurts.

When designing a campaign we all look for very different things based on personal desire and the needs of our gamers. My games tend to run as a mix of Epic Story, Splatterpunk, High Romance, and Cthulhu Horror - all set in a Sci Fi setting.

* The biggest problem I run into is that some of my players, while great players, are terrible writers or worse lazy writers. I am curious to hear how other Narrators deal with poor writing ability of their team. Do you edit their work? Perhaps paraphrase it? something else? I would love to know.

* The second problem we have had over the years is that our campaigns are always a huge sandbox with very official adventures. What do you do when running a sandbox and the Alphas of your team fail to show for a game session? You are left with a couple of players that do not know how to take charge and push the story forward. I hate to always have to create something for them to do. I would love it if they had goals or desire to see the universe on their own. Any suggestions?
Plus it makes for a great way for me to hide clues in plain site without making it obvious that something is important :). it works well for my dresden game since it's set in modern day Florida, other time periods & systems/settings might involve more work. I'm pretty amazed at just how easy it was to warp a kernel of news into something campaign relevant, the Florida setting might be making it easier though.

When I prepare a game I tend to print the house rules and details of the compaign in booklet format. With a large campaign like "Star Trek Late Night":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/star-trek-late-night I foresee needing to print several actual books. Does anyone know of companies that offer very small order book publishing?

I am also looking for a company that can print my drama decks for the palyers to use. The cheapest I have found so far will still run me close to $30 a deck for 162 plastic coated playing cards.

Last thing is dice. I need a company that can make me 6 sided dice numbered 0-5 without breaking the bank. I figure for our team we will need about 150 dice in three diffent collors. (100 black, 30 red, 20 green)

Greetings all! We are working on a real-time browser-based strategy MMO similar to TribalWars KhanWars Evony etc..with one exception(ok maybe a lot). We have 12 races, each with many units. We are looking for someone interested in designing building icons, terrain, and racial units. The game will be free, but like others out there we will have a premium account which will give paying players a slight edge, but also we will allow people to purchase goodies to help. Naturally, if we go live and make some loot, we are planning on splitting some of the profits . Anyway, if anyone is interested in helping design a GUI, units, terrain, etc please PM me here on the forum.

Ok so yes I am planning one of these games but while the game is more or less ready I have decided to do play by post and am not really sure as to how. Not like where to put the posts but what works overall as the game progesses. I have talked to some people privately but i thought i might put this out there on the forums for some general advice.

1) How often should it be required to post?
2) How was combat handeled?
3) What were your experances as a GM or player and what would you keep or change to improve?
4) Who did the dice rolling?
5) Any advice on EXP?

These are my general questions but if anyone has anything else that might help i would apprecate it.

Im not posting the site link or anything as im not looking for players here. Im really looking for advice on how the game mechanics of the PBP will work

Hey everyone,

So I had a recent session that was just one big fight....A town my player's characters were in was besieged by a multitude Mephistopheles and their role was to help in some way. To make matters worse, none of the party members were near each other in the fight.

To set the scene, there were 20+ zombies, 8 gnashers (think langoliers but on short stubby legs), 6 gargoyles (not D&D gargoyles, more nasty). There are 7 players but only 5 showed up for this session and their characters are 2nd/3rd level. Before everyone showed up I preset the monsters and characters on the map. The character were awoken to screaming and when they went to assist, they came on the effects of some psychotropics. Their assessment of time and distance were so warped they could not keep together in the confusion of the town in chaos.

When the fight started, they were in various parts of the town and there were about 12 villagers still hadn't found a place to hide (they were trying to get to one of the stone buildings). All the player's save one immediately went to attack the closest creature to them. None of the creatures were 'easy kill', the zombies were the simplest and they had 39 hp each (which low for this game). Now the fight was designed that if you kept moving, they couldn't attack you, just follow you around the town. The NPC had it bad, they could be overrun and finished off.

So, as the players fought their immediate surroundings, the monsters closed in on whatever was closest and after about three rounds villagers started dying and the party found out that they could brute force their way through this encounter. One player did have his character help the villagers, running and directing them to get them to safety, he only stopped to take the brunt of attacks while the villagers ran ahead.

Well to make a long story longer, the managed to save 4 villagers out of 12. I only counted 2 of them as actual 'saves' as these were the two the 'heroic' character had helped. One was saved by game master coercion, the other merely coincidental, happen to be running in the same direction as one of the characters trying to get away.

None of the monsters were new to the players/characters and most of the party had known each other for a long time. The real problem is a strong lack of leadership in the group and the two players who could actually pull of the role would rather not do it. There is an issue with heckling anyone trying to give orders. I did not expect them to kill everything and there was a lot of random movement, no-one was bum rushed. I was surprised that no-one tried to even seek out another player and there were some statements to the effect "I didn't know where you were, everything was in chaos" as if some of the players overcompensated for player knowledge to justify being obtuse.

This is not the first time this has happened and I was kinda enough to let those actions slide, but at this point I feel I should have just TPK'd the party and be done with it. thoughts?
