I am working on an Expanded Universe Star Trek Campaign. During the design process we are adding hundreds of races from various settings (Star Wars, Dr Who, Farscape, Babaylon 5, Mass Effect, Fading Suns, etc). If you have a home brewed alien race that you would like to add to our database, please share the statistics and background info on the race. If I like what I see I will convert it to the ICON system and add it to the game. One of the great things about OP is the ability to share resources and I hope that those of you who are creative will share your thoughts and ideas on this subject.

Hi all,
I've been a silent member for a while but I have finally invigorated my players enough to get them involved in Obsidian Portal and have been updating and adding like crazy to my campaign as a result of our shared enthusiasm.

I wanted to post a question to fellow DM's and Players. I read recently on Penny Arcade I believe about damage behind the screen. I have played with the idea and my players are a bit concerned about the outcome of this type of mechanic.

To elaborate, I would roll my attacks and then describe damage done to my players with great detail via oratory delivery. Likewise when they attack they can tell me their damage number and rather then explain what hitpoints the monster has left, they get a description of the attack's result. When I attack them, I keep their HP value totals and current behind the screen so they never know numerically how they are doing.

I value any feedback that you folks have to offer about this idea/style of DMing.

Thanks,

Having played RPG's since 1978 I have played the gambit of good and bad games. For me the most interesting and exciting game we ever played was a game by BTRC called Timelords. The setting was a group of gamers sitting down to a game of Dungeons and Dragons when the twenty sided die starts to glow and then a wave of energy shoots forth transporting us and everthing with 10 meters of the die to 12th century England. We actually pulled out a tape measure and the only gear players started with was what was within 10 meters of that damned die. Lucky for the party I had a pistol in a nightstand plus a dozen or so swords, axes and other weapons in my appartment. As the world we ended up in was twisted by somekind of Cthulhu manifestion. We barely survived, mostly by running.

The adventures of playing ourselves traveling through time and to alternate dimensions was both exciting, fun, and frustrating too. It was quite a slap in the face when we actually generated characters and discovered our true worth on paper. lol The game had a system in place for figuring out your real world attributes and skills. Quite fun.

So what about you. What was the best game you ever played and why? I am not talking about game system but rather the most memorable and enjoyable campaign or game session.

I've been running my dnd 4e campaign for my group of friends, and party conflict has driven someone to change their character to avoid it (the PC has stated multiple times that this is his favorite character of all time.)

The PC thinking of switching characters is a rogue. Most of his sidequests require him to be sneaky about it, and not let the party in on what he's doing.

The last session, he left to do some poison trades in the middle of the night. Due to 'lack of trust' the Cleric of Bahamet was checking the rogue's bed throughout the night, which was obviously empty at one point. An argument followed, where the rogue was bullied (in my opinion at least.) It was kept in-game, but I feel like the cleric had a problem with the rogue doing rogue things out of game, and then declared in-game reasons for his actions. At the end of the session, I talked with the cleric further, and his points all led to that his character would never accept a rogue or thief type character in the game. Keep in mind, the rogue has never stolen from the party, stolen in front of the party, or anything like that. His skills allow others to recognize him as a rogue and maybe a thief. Other than that, there have been no signs of distrust.

So one player's character design has now alienated, and disrupted another player's character. Which I feel is unfair.

This occurs at least every other campaign in a similar manner, involving the same players and sometimes others. I can't think of any recourse to keep everyone happy, which happens from time to time. However, it really doesn't sit well that someone is losing their favorite PC to what feels to me like out of game bullying.

If anyone has dealt with a situation similar, I would love any input or advice you have. I've been checking blogs for hours, and I can't find any DM's with the same dilemma. I understand a need to roleplay party conflict and tensions, and I feel it adds to the game. This seems to cross the line though.

Alright folks - lengthy stuff below, which is the meat and potatoes of the post. Basically, I'm going to be introducing the concept of cryptic alliances into my Gamma World game - a new "behind the scenes" conspiracy for each player to possibly work for (should they choose), much in the same way they kind of worked in Paranoia. This is going to be dealt with at the beginning of each major adventure in the form of random cards - much like the ones they give out in the Gamma World expansion, "Famine in Far-Go".

The thing is, I don't think 5 alliances gives enough variety, so, I'm bringing up old ones from both this game world, and mashing them with Paranoia's groups (and maybe a few of my own). Thing is, I'm trying to come up with some of my own effects for these groups. If you have any ideas - please, drop 'em here.

-----

*Archivists (Romantics)*
- Reveal: Any time during an encounter.
- Effect: At the end of the encounter, each of your allies must make an Omega Charge check for each Omega Tech card he or she draws. Until the end of the session, whenever you draw an Alpha Mutation card, you can draw an additional card for each of those Omega Charge checks that failed. Then choose one of those cards and shuffle the rest into the deck they came from.

*The Brotherhood of Thought (Psions)*
- Reveal: At the start of an encounter.
- Effect: Until the end of the encounter, you gain a +5 bonus to overcharge checks for psi Alpha powers, and your allies must overcharge psi Alpha powers, if possible. When an ally overcharges a psi Alpha power during this encounter, you gain a +1 power bonus to attack rolls to all defenses until the end of your next turn.

*Communists (Reds)*
- Reveal:
- Effect:

*The Church of the Subgenius (Slackers)*
- Reveal:
- Effect:

*The Created (Bots)*
- Reveal:
- Effect:

*The Followers of the Voice (Programmers)*
- Reveal:
- Effect:

*Free Enterprise (Mobsters)*
- Reveal:
- Effect:

*The Illuminati (Them)*
- Reveal:
- Effect:

*The Knights of Genetic Purity (Purists)*
- Reveal:
- Effect:

*New Dawn (Luddites)*
- Reveal: At any time during an encounter.
- Effect: Each character making an Omega Charge check at the end of the encounter takes a -5 penalty to the check. Your gain a bonus to your skill checks and saving throws equal to the number of those Omega Charge checks that fail. In addition, you gain a bonus to attack rolls equal to half the number of those Omega Charge checks that fail. These bonuses last until the end of your current session.

*Radioactivists (Mutants)*
- Reveal: At any time.
- Effect: Draw a number of Alpha Mutation cards equal to the number of untapped Alpha Mutation cards your allies have. Keep one of those cards and shuffle the rest into the deck they came from. Then each of your allies experiences an Alpha Flux.

*The Ranks of the Fit (Bonapartists)*
- Reveal:
- Effect:

*Restorationists (Survivors)*
- Reveal: When an ally reveals a Cryptic Alliance card and you are conscious.
- Effect: Choose one: 1. Negate the Cryptic Alliance card that was played and gain a power bonus to attack rolls and skill checks equal to the number of revealed Cryptic Alliance cards (not including Restorationist cards) until the end of the session. 2. Any effect from a Cryptic Alliance card that was played that applies to allies instead applies to the character that played the card, and any effect that applied to the character instead applies to that character's allies.

Greetings,

So as I browse through the postings in the forums here, I keep running across ways that GM's and players are using technology to better their games. Using software to create maps, sending them to players. Ive read about using software where the players are shown on the map, and the GM places the monsters on there. I assume everyone in the group is using a laptop to do this. Ive read about people using maps and an overhead projector, beaming the map onto the table from above and then placing the real figures down onto the image.

I was just wondering --- what are your favourite techniques and methods to increase the enjoyment and efficiency of your games?

I for one, have terrible math skills. I was thinking about making a sliding scale thing to calculate THAC0's. Yes, I use the dreaded THAC0 systems from 2nd edition D&D, LOL! That way, I do not have to use my head fingers and toes each roll I make to see if a creature hits a player!
Of course, I'm not expecting to matchthat- but hopefully it gives you a ballpark for what I'm after.
I'll be pleased if I can find any C3-P0esque vaguely female, humanoid droid with a feminine face/head. Don't care what line of minis it comes from and happy to customise form multiple sources.

Hello everyone, I am hope this is in the right spot. I know some people use forum-based and others probably used messenger or even chat-based for their RPs. I for one am partial to chat-based, just because it is quicker and can still be saved and picked up later. I use a site now for one-shot or just playing around. The site is http://www.roleplaychat.org/. Free to sign up, pretty good system and you can even make multiple profiles linked to the same e-mail if needed. Just putting it out there in case not many knew about it. I am currently in no serious RPs and willing to take part in just about anything in any role. I have started learning the Silcore system as well as getting proficient in Pathfinder, being the 3.0/3.5 fanatic that I am. I have just about any book in pdf from you may need. So feel free to message me if ya ever need anything.

Have a good night and good gaming to all.

Okay, so I have recently joined here and am in the progress of making a Campaign world. Not just a campaign but a full scale world map for it. While I dont need EVERYTHING mapped out, I do still need the most distinguishing features. Jungles, Islands, Mountain Ranges, Lakes, Oceans and so on. Anyway, I need ideas on where to start with this. I have a general idea of a town and its surrounding region but from there on out is up for debate. Any ideas would be great. If needed I can always give a small description of the current area I have made. On a side note to that, my world is HUGE. Certain parts are ancient and have buildings that span hundreds of feet across. And those are the small ones at that. Well the smaller of the big buildings. I didnt even bother putting the normal size buildings down on my current map. Anyway, ideas please! Also, I generally make my maps on paper since the cc3 program I have is insanely different then what I know of how to do (which is through paint) so any tips on programs to use or tutorials on how to use cc3 properly would also be welcome.

Hey,

I'm not sure if I've posted this before, but I just wanted to share what I use in my campaign for monster tokens on the battle maps.

They are essentially pictures taken from all the published material and almost any other fantasy art I could get my hands on. I simply take away some of the background, to get a nice clean and white look. After that I shrink it down and put it into a nice 1x1 inch square. I take a full sheet to Staples, print it off and then I glue them to card stock and cut them out.

If people are interested I'll upload all 20 pages of them. I've printed multiples, so I have thousands of different monsters. Also, I have a second sheet that goes on the back of the counters which has their name on it.

If I've already posted this, I apologize. I have a bad memory.

I was going through some of the adventures published by Wizards and I thought 'now why can't my adventures look like that?', so I decided to rectify that. I ended up with a design that is very much inspired by the official published adventures. I simply created a template which I can easily edit. Then I saved the file as a PDF so that I could read them from my laptop at the table. It works out really well and I find it much easier than having it on paper. Plus, I can easily create hyperlinks to certain things.

New to OP, Can I Run a Game Here?

I just found this site, and I was wondering what can I do actually ON the site. I see, so far, that I can use it as an easy place to 'home' a game, enter a lot of info and have a good resource for myself and my players, as well as being able to keep a blog about my game and a calendar and such. All of this is awesome...

...but can I run a game ON the site? I've been using RPOL.net to run games both for myself (selfish!) and for my friends who no longer (and some of us never did) live near each other, so it's now impossible to run games face-to-face, so we use play-by-post options to keep out group alive, as well as find new players to play with.

Can I do that on/with OP's help?

I noticed that many people have used what I suspect to be 3rd party (often semi-professional) artwork on Obsidian Portal. How free are we to use such artwork? If I find an image on a random artist's website, or on a fantasy art ring, etc, can I just use it, or do I need to cite where it came from (I've noticed most people don't do this), or do we have to obtain specific permission from the artist? Is it assumed that if an artist posts their work in a form that can be downloaded that it is open access?

Thanks.
