It has been a long time since I have been able to play in an RPG. I am the only one in my group that runs anything. One of my players is planning a game, but it has been a long time, and I am not confident that we will ever get to play it. In the mean time, I am the DM. I just want to play for a change.

So, when Gaaran approached me about Rase's online game, I was super excited. I really want to play, and this could be an opportunity to play with some of the awesome folks I've met here in these forums and on this mighty website we all know and love. I was supposed to play tonight when I got home from work. Instead, due to a bunch of ridiculousness, I didn't get home until midnight, and I missed my chance to start playing as mah dood, Simon Cruz.

Bummed doesn't suffice. I am totally depressed about this. :(

Hey, guys! I have a Facebook-related question for you. I want to have my site updates post on Facebook, but I don't want them to post to my wall. I only want the people playing in those specific games to see the Obsidian Portal updates. I have a private group set up with all those people in the group, so I was wondering whether or not there was a way to set it up so my Obsidian Portal facebook updates would post on the group's wall, instead of mine. Otherwise, I guess I could just copy/paste the url for everything I do and update the group manually. However, I thought I would ask about whether I could automate this process or not.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

One of my favorites (and the favorite id my former group) was an encounter I ran in a homebrew world. it was loosely based off Terry Brooks' Shannara series. I had a skull bearer chasing down the pcs, and they thought to distract it by throwing out a hunk of troll ass (yes that's right, how they got it is another story). anyway I had the creature pick it up and throw it at the pcs horse for the hell of it. it criticaled. then backed it up with another 20. couldn't believe it. so I decided that it hit the horse in the head, knocking it out and sending the pc flying. the players loved it. troll ass has been a running joke since

For the unaware, this spell lets you write a few magical runes on something that when read, detonate, dealing a significant (deadly for most people) amount of damage with no saving throw. This spell is permanent, and has no material cost, so an enterprising wizard could spend the rest of his life casting it on pieces of paper and selling them for practically any price. What do you think about the implications of this spell? Personally, I feel that a reasonably high-magic setting, it would be inevitable that the market would become flooded with these difficult to avoid but easy to produce magical traps. There's not much reason why everyone from Orcs to Orcus wouldn't be using them.

Hello all. So we're almost a full week into the year 2011, and I'm looking forward to another great year of gaming and sharing gaming adventures here on Obsidian Portal. I've been lucky enough to talk to and learn from so many great GM's who've built amazing web pages to host their campaigns, Arsheesh and Duskreign just to name two, and I've been inspired to make some much needed upgrades to my own campaign page for Star Wars: Dawn of Darkness.

Now the page as it is right now has developed and evolved as I learned new page making skills, and thus isn't entirely consistent all the way through. Hopefully, by months end I should be able to complete the following:

- Design a new Campaign Banner and Home Page graphic to welcome users to the site.
- Make my wiki more organized with more logical categories and easier to use.
- Conform all the wiki pages to the same format and structure.
- Conform all the illustrations I've made to the same format and rough shape and size.
- Create a "Regions of the Galaxy" section in the wiki, to help people appreciate the vastness and wonder that is the Star Wars galaxy.
- Create a "Planet Hoppers Guide" section, that physically shows the viewer where the PC's have traveled to in the galaxy and when they did it.
- Put a higher emphasis on PC made material.
- Make an opening crawl video introduction for every session.

So that's what I'm planning to do in the next month, or two or three if that's what it takes. When all's said and done I truly hope that viewing Dawn of Darkness's page will be as great and fun an experience as being a part of the Star Wars universe itself. Until then, good gaming everyone!

I just wanted to see how fellow DMs (and also players) felt about this:

Most of my campaign is set within the confines of relatively appropriate Challenge Rating. (Appropriate to the level of the Characters and the Campaign) but occasionally I feel like putting in something much more potent! (Challenging the characters beyond what they should usually have to encounter). My argument for this is that sometimes, this is how life works out.

(Understand, I am not aiming for Total Party Kill here and it is VERY IMPORTANT that this does not happen in the first two thirds of my campaign, but I am setting a MASSIVE random encounter for my players soon. Theoretically, they should lose, but I believe they will WIN the day. I don't know how, but I am giving them the benefit of the doubt.)

How do other DMs (players) feel about this policy?

Hey Guys,

So I used to do quite a bit of sketching in highschool and took a drawing class my Freshman year of college. Since then life has gotten busy and I haven't made time for drawing. However I've always regretted this. You see I used to love to draw, it was one of the few things I was good at in highschool and it provided me my primary creative outlet back then. At any rate, I've been meaning to get back to drawing for some time, and moreover have really wanted to learn how to paint. Well, I discovered GIMP last January and, after being inspired by the artwork of my fellow Opites decided to go for it.

I started with an old "rough sketch":http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz351/arsheesh2/Age%20of%20Legends/Mara1-1-1.jpg of a character (Mara) that I had done for my Age of Legends campaign about a year ago. I had scanned the image into my computer back then in order to upload it to my site. The image is pretty low resolution, but since this is really just a trial run for me I'm OK with that. Anyway, I then did some web research on how to paint in Photoshop (most of the GIMP tutorials were woefully bad). Once I was confident that I understood the basics, I went to work on painting the face of Mara.

It took allot of trial and error trying to figure out flesh tones and blending, but after several hours I feel that it is starting to come together. I wanted to share my WIP with you guys since it was your creativity that inspired me to take up artwork again. At any rate, here is what I've got so far: "Mara WIP 1":http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz351/arsheesh2/Age%20of%20Legends/Mara_WIP_1.jpg. As you can see, I haven't gotten very far. I still need to add highlights to the hair, and I feel like there is something wrong with her neck, but I'll get to that later. At any rate, thanks Dusk, SHIN and Dyluth; you guys are really the ones that provided the impetus for me to want to learn how to do this.

Cheers,

So my current game is going to be coming to a close soon. We're beginning to lose some steam for the game, and we're approaching a logical conclusion (and as far as the players are concerned, it will be the actual end), so I'm going to go out strong, instead of letting the game peter out. But that's not what this post is about. The next game that I'm going to be running is an epic level 3.5 game. I thought I'd throw out a general plot that I've put together and get some opinions and suggestions.

The characters are yet to be determined, but they will be level 21. They will probably begin in sigil, retired adventurers enjoying their new lives. There will be some sort of hook. The first portion will use the basic outline of the Death's Reach module from 4e. The players will have to go to death's reach, an ancient battlefield from the dawn war, and now the gateway that souls use to pass into the afterlife, because Orcus has found a way to enter the area, and if he is not stopped, he will gain power unimaginable. However, the real reason he is going there, is because he's being tricked by Vecna to retrieve the dormant soul of Timesus, the Black Star, a Primordial.

Unfortunately, they will get there too late to stop Vecna's archangel from taking Timesus, leaving the party to face off with Orcus. After they do so, sealing Death's Reach back up, they must find out who that other creature was. Their investigation will lead them to Osterneth, the Bronze Lich, and Vecna's mightiest mortal servant. Over the course of their research, they will find out that within her heart beats the actual Heart of Vecna, which he gave to her. They can kill her, but unfortunately they don't possess the power to destroy the heart. For that, they need the only weapon that has tasted Vecna's flesh, the Sword of Kas.

After Kas was destroyed by Vecna for his betrayal, his soul did not pass through Death's Reach, but instead was captured by Mephistopheles for reasons known only to him. However, that means that the party must head to the 8th level of hell, Cania, and make a deal with the devil. In exchange for Kas, the party will have to search through an ancient citadel in the frozen wastes, barred to all immortal beings, and bring to him the secrets within. Upon their success, Mephistopheles frees Kas from his icy prison, for the party to do what they will.

After all of this, the party finally can destroy the Heart of Vecna, giving them the ability to harm Vecna. They must travel to the plane of Pandemonium to find Vecna's secret tower and confront him, once and for all.

So there you have it, that's the story, but I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions for encounters and tricks and whatever for epic level characters I would love to hear them!

You guys are the *awesome-sauce*. Aside from the community being genuinely friendly and extremely helpful, it's like every time I hop on to the forums someone has created some form of HTML-manipulation to add to the campaign pages and make them that much cooler. I often find myself clutching my face with gleegasm and shouting "_THAT IS GENIUS_" in the middle of the night and waking everyone in the house up. Thank you OP community. Give yourselves a pat on the back.

Just sayin'. That is all. Discuss.

On a side note, I think that the worst feeling in the world, aside from critically failing a roll at a vital moment, is having to poop and being extremely hungry... _At the same time_. If you eat first, you may force everything out and soil yourself. If you poop first, do you really have much of an appetite afterward? It's a lose/lose situation, really... But... I digress. =(

So I have a ninja wanting "Ring of Telekinesis":http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Ring_of_Telekinesis. No special information, just functions as if one cast Telekinesis.

Here is "Telekinesis":http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Telekinesis

My issue with it is anything that has a check like grappling, disarming, etc says...

"...you use your Intelligence modifier (if a wizard) or Charisma modifier (if a sorcerer) in place of your Strength or Dexterity modifier..."

So with this I can see 4 possible solutions, I just don't know which one would be closest to the rules.

1. The stats are based on the caster that casted the spell to make the ring.
2. The character using the ring picks between the two stats, whichever is higher.
3. The character uses the stat based on who made the ring. i.e. if it was a wizard the ninja would use his Int.
4. This item can't be used by anyone other than someone who has this spell in their spell list.

Hello, I have a question about Obsidian Portal contests and what not. I was wondering if there was going to be a contest for the month of November or possibly December, one such as the "Squidgirl" contest and the "Your Most Important Roll" contest. I only found out about the squidgirl contest too late to join, but I had a lot of fun with the most important dice roll contest and would love to see another one put on by the portal, if not this year then hopefully in the new year.

Hello all once again. I just wanted to say that my Q-Workshop dice just arrived in the mail from Polska and that their dice, specifically the Dwarven set are just spectacular! I certainly can't wait to break them out in my next game session and see if any lucky roles came included in the package :)!

Have a lot of other members of the community here picked up dice sets from Q-Workshop? If not I would definitely recommend them.

Building a world/campaign setting, at points, takes more time than making the actual campaign itself. I'm diligently working on my campaign setting/first campaign, though. I can't wait until I have enough so that I can show you guys and get your feedback.

I'd like to get everyone's opinion on something, though. What, in your personal opinion, is a _must have_ in every campaign? It can be anything. I'm just looking for some extra ideas/flare.

So I've recently started trying to get a group together to run an awesome campaign, but we've had some scheduling issues. To build up the feeling for the session, I really want to do something to boost the campaign! Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I flesh out my character's home village? How much detail should I go into?

I _really_ hope I can get crowned an Obsidian Portal Emissary For PAX East 2011. I really wanna get the word out as much as humanly possible. I'd _love_ to see the community flourish and these forums to become more active. I've only been here for a short time but I love OP and the community and I'd like to see it grow into something huge, like it deserves to.

I just wanna say thanks again to everyone who has shown love and made my stay here thus far that much more enjoyable.

Anyways, just voicing my opinion. Any thoughts/opionions, folks?

magic and warfare

I am starting a war time campaign using the Pathfinder system (very similar to AD&D 3.5) and I want to truly integrate magic into warfare, not just a mage becomes a weapons platform (which i will still use) but shift warfare to seem like it is being done by a society that has evolved while being steeped in magic. These are what I have thought of so far, but I would love others ideas as well:

Animated soldiers: (clay warriors) Everyone has seen the terracotta soldiers from Asia, with magic they are real soldiers in my game, not the entire army, but a solid chunk of soulless, fearless shock troops. They come in 2 sizes, medium and large, but in general act like lesser golems.

Magic ammunition for siege weapons: Now this is a 2 part, one being exploding with magic energy normal ammunition, the other is a way to break a siege, fire ammunition over the wall that casts a modified summons spell, making elemental, or anything else show up right around the ammunition. This can place troops inside a besieged castle or town without having to scale the walls or crash the gate first.

Undead soldiers: the army that keeps on growing

Unit level buff spells: Mass enlarge, Mass magic weapon

Terrain altering spells, Fog bank, wall of stone, move earth, wind walls

Any other ideas anyone has on the true integration of magic into warfare I would love to hear.

In my "campaign":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/dragonbone-kingdoms I award players "Action Points":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/dragonbone-kingdoms/wikis/action-points for all kinds of things, and I think it would be fun to use some sort of physical coin or chit to represent them.

I know GameMastery makes campaign coins, but those are a little pricey for the number that you get. Does anyone have any suggestions for something that would be distinctive, but not outrageously espensive?
