I posted a question 2 years ago asking for help on using the website to find and start online games.
http://forums.obsidianportal.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=3485
Well I've learned that I could list my game as online, but when I looked around the site for options to filter for online games there was none.
I came back after two years and there is still no way for me to join or have people join an online game without an invitation.
What is going on?
I remember the older version of the site was a lot easier to navigate, the filter function was also more powerful. The current layout simplifies things too much and feels like it would work better on a touch pad, except for the fact that it doesn't feel intuitive to navigate around the site. There was the ability to distinguish between online and offline games, you could also see if a game was being planned and was looking for players.
I also don't like the fact that when I get onto the site, it opens on my campaign page instead of some central front page with everything listed on it.
I think this site is very good for storing campaign information, but it use to be able to do so much more.
Comments
This site has gone through a bit of a transition here. Things started to fall off with the old ownership and the project fell into something of a stasis. The site has been bought out now by another company, "Kaleidoscope Global":http://kaleidoscopeglobal.com/ and is starting to get things transitioned and ironed out to breath new life into the site and community. More details about this can be seen on the "Official Blog Post":http://blog.obsidianportal.com/behind-the-curtain-2015-update/ on the subject. A lot of focus presently is on fulfilling the Reforge Stretch Goals from Kickstarter some time back since these are unfulfilled promises up until this point. They are also in discussion on some other features that might be beneficial to the site.
I won't comment so much on old design compared to new design. I didn't know the old design at all, and the reality of the matter is those days are in the past now. There is some discussion going on about things in the "Launch Feedback thread":http://forums.obsidianportal.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=3394&page=23#Item_2 and you could probably kick out some input and ideas in there as the crew seems generally receptive to things.
As for the page you go to when you come to OP, this is decided by a setting in your profile. Your default campaign can be set to nothing, which will then load your Dashboard when you come to OP as opposed to opening your Campaign page. Just change up that setting and you should be all set to go there. You could alternately setup your bookmark for whatever page you happen to want to load first if your personal Dashboard is not desired either.
I hope some of that helps, or points you in the direction of some deeper answers to your questions, comments, and concerns. I would be happy to help with anything else I am able to, but again bear in mind that I am in no way affiliated or work for Obsidian Portal or their parent company Kaleidoscope Global.
