Suggestions for a situation in A Ocean themed Dnd Campaign A Mates doing

Can people give their thoughts on The Pcs questionable luck in A Ocean themed Dnd Campaign A Mates doing

A random event roll in Dnd saw A Fleet of 3 Slaver Ships attack A Merchant Ship carrying The 5 Pcs

Each of the 3 Slaver Ships had 326 slaves made up of 160 Male Galley slaves, 84 attractive female slaves, 46 girl children and 36 boy children, that's a total 978 slaves made up of 480 Male Galley slaves, 252 attractive female slaves, 138 girl children and 108 boy children

The Slavers couldn't get through The Pcs Armor due to none of The Slavers being higher then 4th level and The Pcs ranging from 8th level to 10th level and in the resulting melee all 120(40 per ship) Slavers and 60 Merchants where killed

Now The 5 Pcs have sole possession of 2 million in cash, 400,000 in Cargo, 120 dead slavers with bounties on the heads totaling 1,260,000 Gold Coins, 63 minor, 5 moderate and 1 major magic items and 4 large ships but they have no one to crew them

This is because when it became clear they were going to lose the slavers killed the slaves in their holds by having their slave collars boil their brains and the nearest friendly port is 6 weeks away

They can't do things like Hire a Crew, Sell the Ships, Free the Slaves or Form a Pirate Crew without getting to a friendly port and with no crew they have no way of doing that

Any Navy Ships that find them will likely claim the ships themselves and string them from the mast supposedly for piracy to stop The Pcs making a salvage claim, which in these circumstances would likely work

With all the slaves and merchants dead theirs no independent witness's, making it even more precarious

Well, if they were caught, "Speak with Dead" is an option, I'm sure one of the many hundreds of dead bodies would happily squeal on their former shipmates, especially the slaves who wouldn't have any reason to deny answering the questions.

If the non-merchant crew of the merchant ship is still alive, they could crew the merchant vessel which could in turn be used to tow the others.

That said, 2 million coins of any denomination is quite a bit of money, it may make sense for the PCs to just loot all of the magic items and the heads of the dead slavers, then escape their small armada of corpses before the Navy can find them. Once they arrive at a friendly port, then they turn in the heads for the massive bounties and walk off into the sunset with ludicrous amounts of wealth for their level.

If I were a member of that party I'd recommend just taking all the currency and every magic item we could carry, then setting fire to the ships and fleeing the area. That much currency alone is a mind boggling amount of wealth for a party of level 10 adventurers.

For reference, at level 10 any individual player character should be worth about 50k in gold, maybe closer to 66k if they are almost to 11th level. The amount in just the platinum coins alone is equal to roughly five 10th level adventurers, or three vorpal swords (+6) and some change. That's an untenable amount of treasure to reward for a single encounter which is completed by 10th level adventurers, and likely exceeds the net wealth of several local small kingdoms.

Was one of the slavers named Smaug by any chance?

You asked Was one of the slavers named Smaug by any chance and to be honest no but they did recently kill A Ancient Red Dragon of that name that was A Dnd Version of Smaug and were on their way back from looting his treasure, my mate thought it was funny, when they met The Pcs
